  8. Vice President Coolidge was on vacation, visiting his father in Vermont when he was awakened in the middle of the night and informed of President Harding's death. Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the thirtieth President of the United States at 2:30 a.m. on the night of August 3, 1923.

  10. Teapot Dome Scandal Revealed

In May of 1921, President Harding had signed an executive order transferring certain oil reserves from the jurisdiction of the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Interior.  Harding's Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, was found guilty of receiving bribes and leasing the federal oil reserves at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, and Elk Hills, California to private companies.  Also implicated in the scandal were Attorney General Harry M. Daughrety, Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby, and Charles Forbes of the Veteran's Bureau.

  18. In 1924 Charles Dawes, an American banker, worked out a proposal that reduced the reparations Germany was required to pay under the Treaty of Versailles.  The Dawes Plan also provided Germany with a loan from American Bankers.

  29. Scopes Trial

In 1925 the Tennessee legislature passed a law forbidding the teaching of evolution in the state's public schools.  Immediately after the law took effect, John Scopes, a science teacher in Dayton, Tennessee was arrested for teaching evolution in a public classroom.  The trial, which took place during the summer of 1925, gave William Jennings Bryan, lawyer for the prosecution, and Clarence Darrow, lawyer for the defense, the opportunity to publicly debate the differences between the creation theory of the Bible and that of Charles Darwin.  In the end Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, which was later lifted.

  33. Sacco and Vanzetti Executed

On July 14, 1921 Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicola Sacco, two Italian immigrant anarchists, were convicted of the murdering two men during the robbery of a shoe factory in South Braintree, Massachusetts. After six years of investigations and appeals, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed on August 23, 1927.

  42. In 1924 Congress passed the National Origins Act which limited immigration by establishing an annual quota.  Under the new quota system two percent of the number of each national group already living in the United States would be admitted into the country as immigrants.

  44. Kellogg-Briande Pact

In 1927 the French Foreign Minister Aristide Briande proposed a treaty with the United States which would outlaw war between the two countries for all time.  Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg broadened the scope of the treaty to included not only France and the United States, but all nations.  In August of 1928 the diplomats from 15 nations gathered in Paris were they signed the Kellogg Briande Pact, promising never to go to war with one another ever again.
